GAGIK ALTUNYAN
Gagik Altunyan is a painter and sculptor, born in 1957 in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1975 he was accepted at the Terlemezyan Institute of Fine Arts, in the Department of Sculpture, where he graduated with Honours in 1981. In 1982 he had his first one man exhibition in the “House of Journalists” art space. From 1983 until 1989 he studied in the Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia under the supervision of professor Sergei Bagdasaryan. During his studies, he participated in numerous group exhibitions with huge success, receiving many praises.
In 1991 he successfully completed his post graduate studies in “Monumental Sculpture” with full scholarship in the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow under the supervision of the Academic Professor Goukas Tsoubaryan. He has worked as an art critic in the Armenian Museum of Modern Art (1992-1993) and he has taught as a professor in the School of Architecture of the University of Yerevan (1993 – 1995). In 1995 he moved to Greece with his family, where he currently lives and works.
In Greece, he had his first one man exhibition with paintings and sculpture in 1996 in “Syn” gallery. After a small pause, in 2000, he presented his new work in “Tzimas” gallery, which was a great success. After this exhibition, he had numerous propositions to exhibit his work. In 2013 he participated in an exhibition in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens which was organized by the historian of art, professor Manos Stefanides, presenting his sculpture “The girl with the skipping rope”. In 2016 and 2017 he was invited to Neuchatel, Switzerland, to make the scenography of two Opera shows, while at the same time he presented two one man exhibitions. In 2018 he created the sculpture “Homer” for the municipality of Alimos and in 2019, a second sculpture, called “the Angel”, was placed again in Alimos.
He has taken part in a number of painting and sculpture symposiums and since 2000 he has been a member of the Chamber of Arts of Greece.
Gagik Altunyan has done more than 20 one-man exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Nowadays, he continues to create and teach in Athens, while his works are exhibited in public spaces and private collections all around the world.
